Huge water sports facility planned in Bahrain
It will cover an area of 100,000sqm and offer divers the chance to explore several structures, including a submerged 70-metre Boeing 747, sculptures and artificial reefs.
BAHRAIN could soon be home to the region’s biggest water sports and maritime facility.
Land has already been earmarked for the project at Salman Town, a major urban development on Bahrain’s north coast.
The Northern Municipal Council has been tasked with developing the new maritime centre, which is expected to include scuba diving schools, sailing, fishing, a marina, aquarium, restaurants and aquaculture facilities.
“Under plans handed over to us by the Housing Ministry, there is a huge space allocated for a maritime centre at the town,” said council chairman Ahmed Al Kooheji.
“Details on how we want to push ahead with the project have been left to us.
“We are in direct contact with investors globally and we hope the new maritime centre project will be the biggest facility of its type in the region, if not the world.
“There should be no delay and we are planning to put the project out to tender in the next few months, after we finalise details of what we want there.
“We have already drawn up ideas for how the centre should be.
“We want it to include diving schools, specialised marinas for tourists and amateurs, an international aquarium franchise, seafood-themed restaurants, aquaculture areas and other maritime activities such as yachting and fishing, besides further attractions that may be of appeal to the public.”
The project is in line with a government drive to attract more tourists to Bahrain.
In April plans to establish marinas on Bahrain’s southern coastline were tabled by the Southern Municipal Council.
Other projects include an eco-friendly, underwater theme park coming up off the coast of Muharraq.
That will cover an area of 100,000sqm and offer divers the chance to explore several structures, including a submerged 70-metre Boeing 747, sculptures and artificial reefs.
It is due to open this year and is being spearheaded by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) and the private sector.
“The Muharraq project is different from what we are envisioning for the Salman Town centre,” added Mr Al Kooheji.
“There would be some similarities like diving, but we want to have training schools – not just sport only.
“The one in Muharraq would be the biggest theme park of its kind internationally and it is set to open soon.”
He added it was time that Bahrain started to make the most of its natural resources for tourism.
“At the moment the sea is not being put to proper use in Bahrain,” he said.
Salman Town is being built on a man-made island that is expected to eventually host a total population of 90,000.
People started moving into homes at the location last May.
