Hong Kong sees cargo volumes slide again in May

The world’s largest cargo hub, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), saw cargo volumes drop again last month.
The airport reported a year-on-year decrease of 7.3% to 405,000 tonnes in May. So far this year, HKIA has seen cargo demand fall in four of five months for which it has reported figures.
Over the first five months of the year cargo volumes are 6.3% behind a year earlier at 1.9m tonnes – a reflection of a general downturn in the air cargo sector.
“Amid uncertain global economic situation, cargo imports decreased by 9%, compared to the same month last year, while exports and transhipments both declined 7%,” the airport said of its performance in May.
“During the month, cargo throughput associated with Southeast Asia, Japan and Mainland China decreased most significantly among the key trading regions.”
